Programs - Education

Chairman
James Reynolds

From the beginning, our branch focused on education of our youth as being the logical direction to take to help ensure the positive growth of our community.

The Education Committee is the most active of our standing committees. They meet on a regular basis with School Administrators, parents and students, including the African American Student League-(AASL) of Cheltenham High School.

One member of the committee is State Representative Lawrence Curry, who serves on the Education Committee in the State Legislature. He can always be counted on to bring timely information to the committee and to the general body Branch meetings.

Members of the committee participated in a three day symposium, held at a local Country Club, designed to explore reasons for, and possible solutions to, the gaps in educational achievement between white and non-white students. In addition to the Cheltenham Area Branch, NAACP, participants included: Cheltenham School District administrators, teachers, counselors and staff, parents and students; community groups and Township officials. At the conclusion of this historic event, a comprehensive report was issued and was included as part of an in depth news article in the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.

The Scholarship Program began in 2005, and to date, five $500.00 Scholarships have been awarded to deserving students. This has been made possible by the generous donations from good friends of the NAACP, such as; Radio One, Philadelphia, E. Steven Collins, National Sales Manager; The Cheltenham Area Multi Faith Council; Wal-Mart, Cedarbrook and Cheltenham Area Branch members.

The Education Committee is always looking form new members, who are eager to help them ensure that educational opportunities are continually made available to our young people, who are after all, “Our Promise of a Bright Tomorrow!”
